Sarah Horowitz’ work is based primarily in drawing, printmaking, and book arts with a focus on formal aesthetics and the natural world. Her drawings and etchings have their origins in a long lineage of botanical illustration, from early medieval herbal books of primitive woodcuts and the 17^th century masterful engravings by Maria Sibylla Merian, to contemporary work on insects by Cornelia Hesse-Honegger. She explores formal relationships of line, balance and composition through drawing plants from life.

Her limited edition books are published under her imprint Wiesedruck (after the river the Wiese near her grandfather’s press Schudeldruck in Riehen, Switzerland) and can be found in collections across the United States including at Yale University Bieneke Library and The New York Public Library. She has received grants from Portland State University and the Regional Arts and Culture Council as well as residencies at Caldera and the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium.
